MAYER Faust Overture
GIPPS Horn Concerto
COLERIDGE-TAYLOR Petite Suite de Concert
VAUGHAN WILLIAMS Symphony No 4
John Andrews – conductor
Ben Goldscheider – horn
We are delighted to present a varied programme of works, including two by unjustly neglected female composers. The prolific German composer Emilie Mayer was dubbed ‘the female Beethoven’ in her lifetime, but her works fell into obscurity after her death. Her Faust Overture – actually more like a programmatic tone poem – encapsulates her work, showing her grasp of dramatic narrative and romanticism. To play the emotive and intense Horn Concerto by Ruth Gipps, Trinity Orchestra is thrilled to welcome the exciting young horn player, Ben Goldscheider. This exceptional work, written for Gipps’s son, Lance, is technically very demanding and is seldom performed.
Petite Suite de Concert by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor is a delightful and charming light music work, contrasting with the final work of the concert, the powerful Symphony No 4 by Vaughan Williams.
Join conductor John Andrews for a pre-concert talk at 7pm
