MAYER Overture No. 2 in D major
MOZART Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat major, K297b
BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92

Trinity Orchestra
Leader: Arwen Newband
Oboe, clarinet, bassoon & horn soloists from the orchestra

The final concert of Trinity Orchestra’s 2023/24 season opens with the fine, energetic Overture No. 2 by Emilie Mayer – a prolific 19th-century German composer.

No composer understood wind instruments better than Mozart, so the solo lines in his Sinfonia Concertante for solo oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon (tonight featuring soloists from within the orchestra) are composed with a fine feeling for their special qualities. It is charming, melodious and has wide appeal, closing with witty variations and a hunting-style coda.

The final work in this concert is the much-loved Symphony No. 7 by Beethoven. Premiering in Vienna in December 1813, the work is considered a notable example of the more ebullient side of Beethoven’s compositional personality, and evidence that, even after the onset of deafness, he still found cause for musical optimism.
