SIBELIUS En Saga
ELGAR Sea Pictures, Op. 37
TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 1 in G minor Op. 13, Winter Daydreams

Holly Mathieson – conductor
Victoria Simmonds – mezzo-soprano

To lead this concert, Trinity Orchestra is delighted to welcome Holly Mathieson. The New-Zealand born conductor has recently been appointed Assistant Conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and is enjoying a glittering international career.

The opening work, an astonishingly evocative and original tone poem by Jean Sibelius, is a wholly abstract composition, depicting moods and feelings inspired by the Finnish landscape. This will be followed by Elgar’s much-loved Sea Pictures, sung by acclaimed mezzo-soprano Victoria Simmonds, who has appeared at major opera houses throughout the world. Elgar was a peerless oratorio composer and he brought to these songs the same use of orchestral resources to make this work one of his best.

Closing this concert will be Symphony No. 1 (‘Winter Daydreams’) by Tchaikovsky, described by The Guardian’s Tom Service as “an important marker in the story of the symphony in the 19th century”, and “one of the most irresistibly attractive first symphonies ever written”.

Join us for a pre-concert talk at 7pm.
