BEETHOVEN Egmont Overture
BRAHMS Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77
SMYTH Serenade in D major
Conductor: Chris Hopkins*
Leader: Clive Hobday
Violin soloist: Laura Rickard
Superb British violinist Laura Rickard is crafting a multifaceted international career as a highly sought-after chamber musician and soloist. Under guest conductor Chris Hopkins – acclaimed conductor with English National Opera and Music Director of Orchestra of the City – Laura will perform one of Brahms’ best-loved and most frequently performed works, his supremely beautiful Violin Concerto. Equally popular is Beethoven’s powerful Egmont Overture, the subject matter of which – rebellion and triumph over tyranny – was of deep importance to the composer.
Continuing Trinity Orchestra’s championing of works by women composers, the concert closes with Ethel Smyth’s first full-scale orchestral work, the Serenade in D which was composed early in her career. From the broad, Romantically influenced melodies, to the playful and cheeky Scherzo, and the epic Finale, this work is a fine representation of what was to come for Smyth.
Join conductor Chris Hopkins for a free pre-concert talk at 7pm.
* please note that Chris Hopkins replaces Rebecca Miller, who was originally advertised as conductor for this performance
