MENDELSSOHN Ruy Blas Overture
ELGAR
Froissart Overture
NERUDA Trumpet Concerto in E flat major
MENDELSSOHN Symphony No. 5, Op. 107, ‘Reformation’

Andrew Morley – conductor
Cameron Johnson
– trumpet soloist

Trinity Orchestra is delighted to welcome back conductor Andrew Morley to open our exciting new season with an exhilarating and varied concert.

We’ll present two contrasting works by Mendelssohn: the fresh and brilliantly orchestrated Ruy Blas Overture, written in 1839 for an opera based on a play of the same name by Victor Hugo containing elements of love, revenge and death, and his majestic ‘Reformation’ Symphony No. 5, with its stately setting of the well-known Lutheran Chorale ‘A Mighty Fortress is our God.’

Between these works we have great pleasure in featuring the dynamic young trumpeter Cameron Johnson to perform the Trumpet Concerto by the Czech composer Johann Baptist Neruda. This concerto was probably written in the 1760s and is an example of a charming, traditional work of its era. In complete contrast Elgar’s wonderful Concert Overture ‘Froissart’ – his first large-scale orchestral work – is full of romantic and glorious tunes.

Join us for a free pre-concert talk at 7pm to learn more about the music.
